2017 Hurricane Blowoff

This year’s Hurricane Blowoff will be held on Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th. The entry window will open on Friday, March 3rd and close on Friday, March 24th. That is when we will have to have received all entries as well. Sorting and labeling of entries will take place on Saturday, March 25th. We will begin pre-judging on Saturday, april 1st and Sunday, April 2nd.

This year’s competition will be limited to 350 total entries with a limit of 6 entries per brewer and no more than 2 entries per brewer in any one sub-style. The cost per entry will be $7.00.

What is it?

The Coconut Cup homebrew competition began 19 years ago as a challenge between the Miami Area Society of Homebrewers (MASH) and the Ft. Lauderdale Area Brewers (FLAB) homebrewing clubs. Participation has grown to include other Florida homebrewing clubs and we have invited homebrewers from across the Southeast to participate in our competition. The 2017 Coconut Cup will be the 18th Coconut Cup sanctioned by the Beer Judge Competition Program / American Homebrewers Association.

In 2014, MASH added the first Coconut Cup Keg Competition to the mix. We will be continuing that tradition this year.

Guidelines and Information

This year’s competition will follow the 2015 BJCP’s Guidelines for sanctioned competitions and will be part of the Florida Circuit. Entries will be accepted from all BJCP Beer, Mead, and Cider Style Categories – as well as a special “Coconut Beer” category; categories may be collapsed as necessary. Entries will be evaluated based on the 2015 BJCP guidelines. The competition organizers and judges may enter the competition. Judges may not judge categories in which they have submitted entries. All entries must have been brewed at home. Entries brewed at commercial establishments, including brew-on-premises, shops, schools, etc. are ineligible.

The Coconut Cup allows no more than six entries per brewer / brewing team. No more than two entries per sub-category can be submitted by any brewer / brewing team. Total entries for this year’s competition will be capped at 450.

Your registration is not committed until payment is received. The competition fee is $7 per entry. Payment will be accepted exclusively through PayPal via the online entry system. No refunds will be permitted after a registered entry is paid for.

All Beer entries must be in 10-12 oz. brown or green glass. No bottles with ink, name-brand lettering (i.e. Corona), or glued or taped on paper labels. Raised NO DEPOSIT, brand names, or manufacturing codes are acceptable. Beers must be capped with crown caps. Meads & Ciders may be entered in 6 to 12 oz bottles. Grolsch-type swing tops are acceptable for meads and ciders. No 22 ounce bombers, 750 ml bottles or plastic bottles are permitted. Bottles not meeting these requirements will be disqualified.

The entry window will be open from January 9 – February 2, 2017. Entries must be received by February 3, 2017 and should be shipped or dropped off at:

Paper entries will not be accepted. All entries must be entered via the online entry system which can be be accessed here: REGGIE CC-2017. The on-line entry system will create a bottle identification page for each entry. Please attach the completed bottle I.D. form to each bottle with a rubber band.

An entry consists of 3 bottles. If you choose to submit less than 3 bottles, you must mention the number of bottles in the comments when registering. Submitting two bottles will make the entry ineligible for Best of Show. Submitting 1 bottle will make the entry ineligible for any medal – although you will still receive a complete review and score sheet.

Preliminary judging will be held as required between February 4 – March 2, 2017.

The Best Florida Beer Homebrew Championships is an AHA and BJCP sanctioned homebrewed beer, mead, and cider competition sponsored by Best Florida Beer. This is the final competition for the Florida Circuit Homebrew Competition, the year-long, state-wide competition to find the best homebrewer and the best homebrew club in Florida.

22nd Commander SAAZ homebrew competition is coming up this September!

We were the largest homebrew competition in the State of Florida last year, and expect record turnout this year (800+ entries)! I ask that all available judge please come out and help judge some delicious homebrewed beer at our prejudging and judging events.

BFBC Florida Circuit Changes for 2016

Florida homebrew club representatives – I’m sending this out to the club contact list that was used after the last meeting in 2013, please feel free to pass on to additional interested parties as contacts may have changed.

As this year’s president of the Best Florida Beer organization I would like to announce several planned changes for 2016 that will affect FL circuit brewers, judges, and competitions.

In recent years the AHA National Competition organizer has made several informal queries about whether we would be willing to host a NHC regional round. We take it as a compliment that the AHA appears to recognize the high standards and participation within Florida competitions as well as our burgeoning beer and homebrewing scene, so BFB has decided to pursue hosting a regional NHC competition slot in 2016.

The scheduling and confirmation of the 2016 NHC regional sites is not yet finalized and will not be for some to come, but we have to make our own scheduling plans now to allow time for planning. The timing of the NHC regional competition is something that is mandated by the AHA in conjunction with the NHC finals usually held in June. The presumed time frame for the regional comps will likely be in late March, which will present an obvious scheduling conflict with the usual time slot for the Best Florida Beer competition traditionally held in the late Feb/early March time frame, as well as some other circuit competitions usually held in that general time frame. Coincidental to this, the Sunshine Challenge made the change this year to cease serving as the concluding circuit competition and moved their competition up to mid-year. Therefore, our plan in 2016 is to move the homebrew portion of the Best Florida Beer competition back to assume the concluding competition slot previously served by SSC and schedule final round judging on October 8th 2016; while the professional side of the BFBC competition (and The Brewers Ball) will remain in the existing February time frame.

Although this change will put BFBC in relatively close proximity to the Commander SAAZ competition planned for mid-September, we found numerous challenges and conflicts in trying to hold it at any time later then the early October time frame, which is at least in part the reason the SSC organizers decided to move their competition earlier in the year. That tight scheduling is also not a significant departure from the usual scheduling of competitions in close proximity to each other in the spring time, and moving back to the fall should help alleviate some of the logjam of circuit competitions that usually occur between late February through early May.

As you know, the NHC regionals are open to all brewers but points earned there do count towards the Fl circuit so it is essentially a de facto circuit competition. In the event we are able to secure the position as a host site for the regionals we do hope the Florida homebrewing community at large will recognize the opportunity to further strengthen the prominence and reputation of the Florida homebrew scene by hosting a regional and will support us both in participating in hosting duties with the competition as well as understanding the need for the scheduling changes. If we are able to secure it we will send further information about the regional competition as it becomes available.
